From the dusty streets of Langa township rose one of the greatest songbirds South Africa has ever seen. Little Brenda Fassie, the Tiny Tot who captured the heart of an adoring audience, was set to rise from the obscurity of her humble beginnings to become the consummate performer and the darling of Africa. As a teen, she set the stage alight and, as a rising pop star, highlighted the stories of every ordinary South African, endearing herself to admiring fans.

As the country's top diva, Brenda came to embody the urban youth of South Africa today. She sang of their experiences, their hopes and their joys and even their sorrows. all the while living the life of which every aspiring performer dreams - much-coveted recording contracts, chauffeur-driven limousines and an entourage of attendants.

But while Brenda was living the dream, her hip stage persona and devil-may-care attitude belied her basic humanity and the turmoil that consumed her soul.
